Koh Samui, Thailand, with its tropical allure, is a year-round destination, but understanding the nuances of its weather patterns can elevate your island experience. In this ultimate guide, we delve into a comprehensive month-by-month breakdown of Koh Samui's weather, empowering you to plan your visit with precision.
January, February & March
In January, the weather is dry and warm at around 24°C -26°C with 7 hours of sunlight per day. The weather is very favourable at this time throughout Thailand and starts to heat up towards the end of the month.
February is hot and sunny with 8 hours of sunshine to enjoy and the lightest rainfall of any month. With sea temperatures of 27°C and little rain, February is one of the best months to make the most of Koh Samui's white sandy beaches.
The weather keeps getting hotter as we get into March with average temperatures of 26-31°C and 8 hours of sunshine. March in Koh Samui has the fewest number of rainy days and the least median cloud cover so it the best time to work up a tan!
April & May
April is hotter, with average temperatures ranging from 28 to 33°C and seawater temperatures of 28°C. This month is humid all over Thailand. Songkran, the Thai Lunar New Year and National holiday, is also celebrated in April. This is celebrated over three days, and large scale water fights are expected in the streets. It's a great opportunity to relieve the heat.
May is also very hot and humid, with temperatures often reaching the same as in April, although there are occasional showers. Rain showers are very helpful at this time of year as they reduce humidity and cool everything down. Mosquitoes love humidity and rain, so be careful not to get bitten.
June, July & August
June is the best time to visit Koh Samui. Escape from the hustle and bustle of the school summer holidays and enjoy warm weather with temperatures of 29 degrees and seawater temperatures of 28 degrees. There is less rain in Koh Samui in June than in other parts of Thailand.
July and August are also warm and mostly dry, but tend to be crowded as families enjoy their holidays. Although the amount of rain increases during these months, it is still much less than in other parts of Thailand and clears up quickly. During these three months, air temperatures (29 °C) and sea temperatures (28 °C) are relatively similar, and daylight hours gradually decrease.
September & October
Like June, September is also a great month to visit Koh Samui, as the weather is just as beautiful as August. Cloud cover will increase towards the end of the month, with a moderate chance of precipitation, but short periods of rain are likely alternating with sunny days. September is a great time to visit the island, as the school holidays are over and hotel and villa prices are often affordable.
Although October is still hot and humid at the beginning of the month, it is on average one of the cloudiest months and can be windy. The rainy season may start on Koh Samui at the end of October. The Gulf of Thailand is influenced by the northeast monsoon, so there is a high chance of rain and sea conditions can be rough. However, traveling to Koh Samui in October is still a good option as there is plenty to do on the island even on rainy days and the weather offers affordable accommodation.
November & December
The island's rainy season peaks in November. Although November remains hot and humid, it is one of the worst months for travelers to travel due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. However, if you are afraid of sunburn and are looking for a relaxing vacation, the rainy season can be a very good option. You can also make the most of your spa day or curl up with a book and listen to the rain while enjoying great deals on hotels and villas.
The average temperature in November and December is still 27°C. December marks the end of the rainy season, and the amount of rain decreases towards the end of the month. Although sunshine isn't guaranteed, Koh Samui is the perfect place to enjoy a warm, tropical Christmas and New Year.
